Famous magnetic Ball wall lamp designed by Benny Frandsen in the late 1960s, the lamp that led to the founding of the ABO Randers A/S company. It is in a very good shape, with only small age-related traces. This wall light enroll in both the Scandinavian Modern and Space Race aesthetics, being an icon of European design in the second half of the 20th century.
Benny Frandsen (b. 1941, named after jazz-clarinetist Benny Goodman) is a Danish designer and lighting producer. He was educated as an electronics engineer but his passion was to design light. By 1966, he had already designed some lamps for a discotheque, and then Frandsen tried to convince his boss to start a lighting production, but no luck. Afterwards, Benny Frandsen established Frandsen Lamps in 1968, by himself, and was located in his home in Skanderborg in Jutland. He designed geometric lamps, but the business was slow. Frandsen discovered that, the Danes wanted round lamps and not geometric lamps, so he began designing a round light instead. Here emerges the ultimate round lamp, a ball that was attached to a wall bracket with a magnet. This was a game changer for Frandsen. Everybody wanted the Ball wall lamp with magnet. Since then, there has been made many variations of this Ball lamp. In 1972, Frandsen starts a factory in Skanderborg, to keep up with the many requests. But by 1993 the company is sold to the Frits Concern, whom merges the lighting production with Lyskilde. This led to Frandsen winning the role of the director, under the new company name, Frandsen Lyskilde. Eventually Benny Frandsen buys the company back in 1996, as the Frits Concern closes, and reestablishes Frandsen Lighting.

The lightshade, made of dark brown bakelite also features an aerodynamic shape. Made in the 1960s, this is a representative piece fort the aesthetics of the Space Race era. The Space Age is a time period encompassing the activities related to the Space Race, space exploration, space technology, and the cultural developments influenced by these events. The Space Age is generally considered to have begun with Sputnik (1957). During the 1950s, architecture, furniture, interior design, cars, and gadget design took on a curiously spaceflight-inspired aesthetic.75 €

About Mid-Century
Frandsen Lighting A/S has been designing, producing and marketing lamps since 1968. This means that we now have extensive knowledge and expertise within all stages of production.
We have a clear vision which forms the basis of our entire product range and all our customer relations:
“Frandsen Lighting A/S develops and sells design products within lighting for people who consider taste more important than price”. It is important for us to design lamps in beautiful materials, and to make sure that our products are signalling quality and taste.
All our lamps will, each in their own way, contribute to creating the setting for a home.
At Frandsen Lighting A/S we are focussing on design and product development.
The company Lyskilde is established in Brædstrup, central Denmark. Their sole production is lampshades.
Benny Frandsen establishes Frandsen Belysning in the basement of his private residence.
The only staff beside Benny are two boys who help him after school. Benny starts out with a study debt of 25,000 kroner.
He begins by designing square lamps as well as the iconic BALL lamp series, initially as a wall lamp model. BALL pendant, table and standard lamps are subsequently launched.
Benny Frandsen wins first prize for best design among hundreds of exhibitors at the LIGHTSHOW exhibition in London.
The award is given for the “Black or White” halogen lamp series.
Lyskilde (in Brædstrup) is acquired by the Friis furniture company.
Benny Frandsen wins first prize for the second consecutive year for best design at the LIGHTSHOW exhibition in London.
The award is given for the 3-Line series.
Frandsen Belysning is sold to the Friis furniture company. Frandsen Belysning merges with Lyskilde under the name Frandsen/Lyskilde A/S.
The Frandsen Project department is created. The purpose is to cater to hotels, restaurants, retail etc. The first giant lampshade with a diameter of 2 metres is produced.
An extensive range of ceramic lamps in fashionable colours is launched.
This year, 600,000 lampshades are produced for IKEA.
Benny Frandsen buys back Frandsen/Lyskilde A/S.
The company is particularly strong in the areas of home lighting, lampshades and technical lighting.
Benny Frandsen wins the Formland Design Prize for the Flyer series (halogen lighting).
The Formland Prize is awarded to Frandsen/Lyskilde for the intelligent mounting system developed specifically for glass lamps.
Launch of a new shop-in-shop concept in Idé Møbler furniture stores.
Frandsen/Lyskilde changes their name to Frandsen Lighting A/S.
Frandsen Lighting A/S establishes a collaboration with Verpan on the production of the VP Globe and Fun series designed by Verner Panton.
DNC Holding (Director of Sales Dorte Nørgaard) and Buhr Invest (Johannes Poulsen) step in as shareholders and join Frandsen/Lyskilde.
Frandsen Lighting A/S acquires Verpan.
The Group now comprises Frandsen Lighting A/S, Frandsen Project and Verpan. The name is now FRANDSEN GROUP.
FRANDSEN GROUP moves to new headquarters – 6,000 square metres in Horsens, central Denmark – built for the sum of 43 million kroner.
